Q: What is QCist.com?

This is a website we created to help prospective graduate students/postdoctoral fellow to quality control (QC) and search for the most suitable science/engineer mentors for their advanced degree and career development. This database will also facilitate scientific field employers to screen for the best candidates for their position based on the reviews/ratings created by their students and co-workers.

Q: Is QCist.com free to use?

It's free to create an account for yourself (or to claim an existing account) and create review/rating for any experts/scientists. It is also free to search for any expert/scientist and see their overall scores in each individual category, which is calculated based on our proprietary matrix. However if you wish to read the details of the rating/review, you will need upgrade your membership. You can either get the promotional free upgrade, pay for a upgraded membership or pay each time when you want to read about one expert/scientist (pay per report). To get the promotional free upgrade, you need to fulfll at least ONE requirements:

  1. Invite at least two other friends or co-workers (who also work in scientific disciplinary) to join and leave one authentic and detailed ratings for scientists in QCist.com.
  2. Give detailed reviews for at least 3 scientists

After fulfilling requirements 1 and/or 2, send us the name of the new member you invited or the scientists you reviewed.

You can also choose to pay to upgrade the membership. Since our main objective is to help prospective graduate student and postdoc to search for a suitable mentor, we have special price for this group of users ($39.50 per year). For users who are in moderate-advanced stage in their career, the price of the annual membership is $95.

Q: How do I rate/review an expert/scientist?

Other than just a text box for you to write, we created a questionaire that contains most of the questions that should interest the prospective postgraduate students/postdocs when they are searching for a mentor. We understand that the options may not accurately describe the quality of the expert, therefore we provide a text box for you to leave additional comments. We also welcome any improvement on the questionaire by leaving us feedback or contacting us directly through contactus@qcist.com

Q: Is the payment made to QCist.com safely guarded?

The payment made to QCist.com is through PayPal gateway. PayPal is known for its security in safe-guarding the information of buyers' credit/debit cards and bank account. PayPal's encryption keeps your online transaction heavily guarded from start to finish. In addition, it also provide fraud prevention. For more information, please visit PayPal Security. Before we have strong confidence in building a shopping cart that allow you to pay securely, we will rather pay a fee to PayPal for each payment we receive from you.

Q: How can I create a review/rating for a scientist/expert who is still not shown in the search result?

It is common to realise that the scientist/expert you are searching is not yet availabe in our database. In that case, you will need to create one for this particular expert. We also expect that you know the basic details of this expert before you decide to create a profile/rating for this expert: full name, keywords for his/her expertise, primary affiliation, location. Once the profile is created, the expert profile will become searchable, you and others can now create the review on the expert. You can find the details to create a new profile for a scientist here

Q: Can I rate the expert anonymously?

Yes, you can do so by checking the "Anonymous" checkbox at the end of the questionaire. You can choose to be anonymous even after the rating is submitted: just go to profile --> rating --> click on the name of the expert you reviewed, scroll down to the end of the questionaire and check the "Anonymous" checkbox, and hit "Submit" again.

Q: Can you tell me more about the calculation of scores?

The range of scores for each category is from 1 to 10; respectively, 10 represents the best score and 1 indicates the worst score in the category. When you see "0" in the particular category, that actually means the reviewer who created the review/rating chose "Not applicable/I don't know" option in all the questions in the specific category. Our algorithm will automatically omit the option with the score of “0”, therefore, it will not alter the score in the particular category, and hence, the overall score. When there are multiple questions under the same category, the system will give the average the scores of each question in the category.

Q: Can I use a nick name instead of my real name to register?

We strongly encourage you to use your real name to register for this website. We reserve the right to delete a user's profile and membership if we determine that the particular user violates the Guideline or Terms of Use. In addition, you may start requesting testimonial and collecting your ratings/reviews from others if you use your real name to register; If the reason you'd like to use a nick name is that you worry that your honest review will lead to retaliation, then you don't need to worry about it. This is because on the rating/review page, you will be given the option to be anonymous when you submit your review/rating on an expert/scientist, to protect you from any potential retaliation from the expert/scientist. In addition, by using your real name, you can initiate discussions and potentially collaboration, under your real name, with any experts who registered with us.
